Composing competition for smallpipes

Composing competition for smallpipes

Budding composers are being invited to submit new material for a competition to coincide with Burns Night.

Donald Lindsay.

The only proviso is that the composition is original and suitable for Scottish smallpipes. Therefore, the composer should take into account how well the tune sounds with drones tuned, first of all to A and then to D and finally to E.

A cash prize of £100 is being offered and the winning tune will be included on Donald Lindsay’s forthcoming album. Donald, pictured right, is the instructor at the College’s Tuesday evening smallpipes’ class and Secretary of the Lowland & Border Pipers’ Society.

Donald’s recording features a set of Scottish smallpipes designed and produced by him. The instrument provides a range beyond the traditional nine-note scale.

The recording includes new works for the pipes from established composers, alongside the contemporary and traditional tunes that inspired the creation of Donald’s 3D-printed Lindsay System smallpipes.

The composition should be submitted in the form of a video performance, which can be anonymous if preferred.  The closing date for submissions is midnight on Thursday, January 25. 

Judging will take place via a poll hosted on the Lindstruments Facebook page from Friday 26th to Wednesday 31st.
