William MacLean

Gesto Manuscript

The 1828 ‘Gesto’ manuscript is the work of Captain Neil MacLeod of Gesto. He noted the tunes from a manuscript of John MacCrimmon one of the last of the famous family. The music is in canntaireachd vocables which differ from those in common use nowadays. William MacLean (pictured right), Kilcreggan, an outstanding piper of his generation and winner of both Gold Medals and the Clasp at Inverness, transliterated these vocables into staff notation in 1910 and this collection the result. They are prefaced with an interesting introduction.
