The Echoes of Oban 2015
This year’s Echoes of Oban took place at the College on November 14, during a night of truly awful weather. Those who made it along were treated to a night of first-class piping. With John Wilson acting as Fear-an-Tighe, we were treated to the winning tunes from this year’s Argyllshire Gathering prize winners: John-Angus Smith (Gold Medal), Sandy Cameron (Silver Medal), Angus MacColl (Silver Star), Angus J MacColl (‘B’ grade March), Charles MacDonald (MacGregor Memorial) and Sarah Muir (‘B’ grade Strathspey and Reel). Willie McCallum was the guest piper and he got the night off to a great start with a short recital which included Donald MacPherson’s jig, Echoes of Oban.
Echoes of Oban was an event held annually in the 1950s and 1960s, when the winners from the Argyllshire Gathering each year were invited to play their winning tunes at a concert in Glasgow. This gave those who had been unable to attend the Gathering a chance to hear some of the winning performances, while those who had attended were able to enjoy the performances again in a relaxed social atmosphere. The College restarted this tradition again in 2008 and has held it every year since.
